Born in Zimbabwe and now based in South Africa is multi-faceted vocalist and producer by the name Melly Mel. You can feel his roots in his music as the bilingual rapper flexes in his home language of Shona and also in English for good measure. According to Melly Mel he discovered his passion for music after dropping out of varsity, something he does not encourage. He goes on to describe himself as “a spirit on the journey of life; stopping to feel and understand everything on my quest for wisdom”.
With Drawing Board, his first single release of the year already making waves, 2020 promises to be a great year for the one third member of the rap trio from South Africa known as The Assembly. The song Drawing Board was produced by Mongameli Msibi, also known as 5mutedB and is taken off Melly Mel‘s upcoming album, titled ODDLY INSPIRED. According to Melly Mel, “the song is a reflection of a new state of mind & is supported by a futuristic rap bounce.
The Assembly is well known for collaborations with legendary artists from USA such as Sean Price and Skyzoo. As if that’s not a lot Melly Mel is also half of Prxject Mayhem a DJ and Emcee duo which recently released a successful single titled Here We Go Now. The single is an amazing mix of EDM sounds on a clever boom bapp backdrop which has a catchy hook and verses in Shona and English. That single definitely is going down…
With a 7-project catalogue discography accumulated over time it’s no surprise he has rocked some of the biggest venues and festivals namely Back to the City festival, Oppikoppi, Woodstock and Splashy Fen to name a few. He has also worked with the likes of Maxhoba, Zubz, Tebogo Moloto and Nokuzo. Two songs that stand out and embody his artistry and vibe that come very recommendable are Munofara Here and Replay.
